Social media has become such a regular part of my daily routine that I sometimes forget just how much I rely on it. For me, it isn’t just a way to pass the time. It is a way to stay connected, express my creativity, participate in my community, and share information. Depending on the day, social media can serve very different purposes in my life.
As a caregiver, getting out of the house and socializing isn’t always easy. That can sometimes feel isolating, so Facebook has become an important way for me to stay connected with friends, family, and the world around me. I enjoy seeing what others are doing, keeping up with people I might not otherwise get to see, and participating in conversations. It gives me a sense of connection even when my day is spent at home.
I also have a creative side, and photography is something I really enjoy. Instagram gives me a place to share that interest. I especially love photographing my garden and sharing pictures of the things I grow. It is a different kind of social media experience for me. Instead of keeping up with conversations and current events, I get to share something beautiful that I have created or enjoyed.
Another important part of my social media use comes from my role on the school board. Facebook allows me to communicate with residents, share information, and connect with constituents. Recently, a city councilor and I started a Facebook and YouTube Live program where community members can join the conversation, ask questions, and learn more about what is happening in local government. We use StreamYard to produce our live broadcasts, and afterward, I use Buzzsprout to distribute the recordings as podcast episodes. What started as a livestream has become another way to reach people who may not have been able to watch live.
The platforms I use most often include Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, StreamYard, and Buzzsprout. Each serves a different purpose, and together they have become part of how I communicate, create, and participate in my community.
My feelings about social media are not always positive, though. I have been using Facebook since its early days, when it felt like a fun and mostly positive place to connect with people. I remember Twitter, now known as X, in much the same way. At one time, it was a wonderful place to find support and exchange information, particularly within the special education community. Those conversations were meaningful, and I learned a great deal from people who shared similar experiences.
Today, I am more cautious. Negative comments and online hostility can genuinely hurt my feelings. I have considered using X to share our community podcast and reach a wider audience, but I hesitate because of the negativity that can sometimes dominate the platform. I think there is a real difference between using social media to have a productive conversation and using it as a place to criticize or attack others.
I also notice how much digital media has changed marketing. Advertising is no longer limited to television commercials, radio, or printed advertisements. Today, companies can reach consumers directly through the platforms they already use every day. I regularly notice targeted advertisements based on interests and browsing habits, as well as influencer marketing, where individuals promote products and services to their followers. Businesses also use social media to communicate directly with customers, answer questions, promote products, and build relationships with their audiences.
What stands out to me is how personal marketing has become. Instead of simply putting an advertisement in front of a large audience, companies can tailor messages to specific groups of people and interact with potential customers. Social media has become both a communication tool and a marketing platform.
When I think about my own use of digital media, I realize that it is woven into several different areas of my life. It helps me stay connected when I cannot easily get out, gives me an outlet for creativity, and allows me to participate in conversations that matter to my community. At the same time, it reminds me that how we use these platforms matters. Social media can bring people together, but it can also push them apart.
As I continue learning about social media marketing, I am interested in understanding more about how businesses use these platforms to reach people and build meaningful connections. I already use social media in so many ways. Now I am learning to look at it through a different lens.
Until next time, friends, stay safe and happy scrolling.
